Five PhD Positions in Computational Literary Studies

The Seminar of German Philology and the Institute of Computer Science/Göttingen Centre for Digital Humanities (GCDH) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen invite applications for 5 PhD positions (male/female/diverse). The positions are open with immediate effect for 3 full years (36 months) part-time (65% full-time equivalent, currently 25.87 hours/week). Renumeration is according to the German TV-L E13 pay scale.

The successful candidates will work in two interrelated, interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of NLP, Linguistics and Literary Studies: “Reflective Passages” (RP) and “Uncertain Attribution” (UA). Göttingen University is a strongly research-oriented university in the centre of Germany. PhD Student (German Philology/Linguistics/Literary Studies)RP
Theory-based narratological and linguistic analysis of different types of reflective passages, genericity and epistemic status

Required Profile

  • Master’s degree in German Philology, Linguistics or a comparable qualification
  • Excellent knowledge of literary and language theory and experience with the literary and linguistic analysis of text structure
  • Sound knowledge of grammar modelling and methods of linguistic analysis as well as excellent knowlege of fiction theory and narratology
  • Familiarity with empirical methods of text analysis, e.g. annotation of text corpora

PhD Student (NLP/DH)RP
Development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of computational models and algorithms for analysing natural language, esp. for identifying reflective text passages, genericity and epistemic status.

Required Profile:

  • Master’s degree in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Digital Humanities or a comparable qualification
  • Excellent knowledge of NLP algorithms and experience with statistical models and machine learning
  • Programming experience and excellent knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Java or Python)
  • Knowledge of linguistic models and theories

PhD Student (German Philology/Literary Studies) UA

  • Familiarity with empirical methods of text analysis, e.g. annotation of text corpora

PhD student (NLP/DH)UA
Development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of computational models and algorithms for analysing natural language, esp. for automatically processing phenomena of attribution and perspectivisation

Required profile:

  • Master’s degree in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Digital Humanities or a comparable qualification
  • Excellent knowledge of NLP algorithms and experience with statistical models and machine learning
  • Programming experience and excellent knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Java or Python)
  • Knowledge of linguistic models and theories
