Research at the Faculty of Humanities UvA is carried out by six research schools under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research. The Amsterdam Centre for Language and Communication (ACLC), one of the six research schools, offers a three year postdoc position as part of the NWO funded research project ‘Exceptions rule! Lexical conditions on grammatical structure’, led by Dr Eva van Lier. Applications are invited from excellent candidates who wish to conduct corpus-based and experimental research on the grammatical behaviour of alternating verbs in lesser-studied languages.
What are you going to do?
According to usage-based linguistic theory, verb-argument constructions are not formed by abstract rules operating on the entire verbal lexicon, but rather emerge from speakers’ experience with specific verbs in communicative context. Psycholinguistic (priming) experiments confirm that language users have highly verb-specific grammatical knowledge. However, such experiments typically assess only few constructions in few languages; in particular dative alternations in certain Germanic languages.
This project will study various classes of alternating verbs across structurally widely diverging languages. Alternating verbs have in common that they require speakers to choose between multiple argument-coding frames.
The postdoc’s tasks are embedded into a larger project, with a team consisting of the PI, a PhD candidate, and specialists/informants of two lesser-studied languages: Chechen and Kamang (Alor, Indonesia). Based on the analysis of alternating verbs in corpora of these languages, the postdoc will design (priming) experiments to assess the nature and relevance of speakers’ verb-specific grammatical knowledge. These experiments will be run at field sites; the postdoc will analyse the results in collaboration with the language specialists, in the comparative context of the PhD project (a typological study of alternating verbs). In addition, the research results will be valorised and applied in various educational settings, with the help of a student assistant.
Tasks will include:
- conducting corpus linguistic research;
- designing and testing psycholinguistic experiments;
- analysing and interpreting experimental data;
- setting up and coordinating valorisation activities (teacher training, exhibition);
- collaborating with PI, PhD, language specialists, student assistant;
- publishing peer-reviewed (co-authored) articles;
- presenting research results at conferences/workshops;
- co-organising expert and team meetings.
What do we require?
The successful applicant must have:
- a PhD in Linguistics;
- demonstrable knowledge of
- corpus linguistics
- experimental design
- demonstrable familiarity with
- a keen interest in / experience with morpho-syntactic typology and linguistic diversity world-wide;
- a keen interest in / experience with societal valorisation of (linguistic) research;
- excellent skills in academic English, both written and spoken;
- excellent social and organizational skills;
- ability and willingness to work in a team;
- a broad international orientation and network.
The postdoctoral researcher will get an employment contract for 26,6 hours per week (0,7 FTE) for a period of 36 months at the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Humanities. The research will be carried out under the aegis of ACLC. Initially an employment contract will be given for 12 months, with an extension for the following 24 months on the basis of a positive evaluation. The intended starting date of the contract is 1 December 2020. The gross monthly salary (on full-time basis) will range from €3,389 (scale 10) to €4,978 (scale 11). The UFO profile for this position is, dependent on relevant experience, Researcher 4 (scale 10) or Researcher 3 (scale 11). The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies.
